Whiplash

An auto accident is scary and can be a stressful, confusing time.  Matters are only complicated when you or a loved one is injured.  Whiplash is a very common automobile injury that typically results from a rear-ending accident.  Chiropractic care is an excellent option to improve the symptoms of whiplash and help speed recovery.  Below, let's examine whiplash in more detail and learn how a chiropractor can help.

What is Whiplash?

People typically get whiplash if they have been involved in an automobile accident.  Rear-ending accidents are the most common type of accidents that can cause whiplash.  This injury happens when the head and neck are quickly jerked forward and backward.  The sudden jerking motion causes the muscles of the neck to become strained or sprained because they have been stretched beyond the normal range of motion.  While whiplash is a type of muscle strain injury, it is important to remember that not all sprains and strains are whiplash.

What are the Symptoms of Whiplash?

The symptoms of whiplash can vary from person to person depending on the severity of the injury.  In most cases, people experience pain in the neck, shoulders, upper back, and arms.  Associated with this pain can be redness or tenderness of the surrounding muscles.  People with whiplash also experience a reduced range of motion, finding it difficult to move the head up and down and from side to side.  In extreme cases of whiplash, people may get headaches or migraines.  Whiplash symptoms may also include nausea or sensitivity to light.  Luckily, in most cases, whiplash symptoms only remain for a few days or weeks and gradually subside.

How can a Chiropractor Help?

Chiropractors work to restore balance to the body through proper spine alignment.  Sometimes when the spine is out of alignment undue stress is placed on the bones and soft tissues surrounding the spine.  A chiropractor has several techniques at his or her disposal to help heal the injury.  Manual manipulation and massage therapy can be used to help redirect blood flow to the injured area to help promote healing.  Further, strengthening and stretching exercises, combined with physical therapy, may be used to help alleviate the symptoms and help with the healing process.  Meeting with a chiropractor, the patient will receive a full injury evaluation and treatment plan custom-made for the individual patient.
