Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

5 Ways to Treat Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Naturally

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a very common condition, and while it's not life-threatening, it can be painful and annoying. In severe cases, it can even hamper your ability to function at work and around the house. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when a nerve in the wrist gets pinched. It's characterized by pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand and arm. While CTS can be treated with surgery, many people prefer less invasive methods of treating their symptoms. Here are five tips from Sebastian chiropractic office David Chiropractic, LLC, on how you can relieve wrist pain naturally.

1. Do stretching exercises throughout the day.

Stretching your wrists can help to "un-pinch" the median nerve and relieve carpal tunnel symptoms. Try this exercise: Place your palms together in front of your chest. Slowly lower your hands, keeping your palms pressed together until you feel a stretch in your wrists. Repeat this exercise every hour or so. Taking the time to stretch is particularly important if your work involves repetitive motions such as using a keyboard.

2. Apply heat or ice to your wrists.

Some people find that heat helps to soothe their wrist pain, while others find that ice packs help to cool down their CTS symptoms. Try both ideas to see which one works better for you.

3. Check your work ergonomics.

If your job requires you to sit down for much of the day, make sure your setup is as ergonomic as possible. Ideally, your wrists should remain straight as you type, and your hands should be level with your elbows or a little below them. A good office chair can help you keep your arms and wrists aligned.

4. Wear a wrist brace at night.

If you sleep with your wrists bent, you could be making your carpal tunnel symptoms worse without realizing it. The solution is simple: get a wrist brace and wear it at night. The brace will keep your wrist straight, preventing further irritation of the median nerve.

5. See a chiropractor.

Your CTS symptoms might be limited to your hands and wrists, but carpal tunnel syndrome is a problem that starts in your shoulders and back. A good chiropractor can identify any musculoskeletal problems that are contributing to your CTS and manually correct them for long-lasting relief.
