Pinched Nerves

Pinched Nerves Are Often Associated With Other Medical Conditions

Tissues surrounding a nerve can sometimes apply excessive pressure and can lead to some discomfort. This condition is known as a pinched nerve. Some people experience the symptoms of a pinched nerve for a short time, which generally does not cause any long term or permanent damage. There are other people who endure the pain associated with pinched nerves on a daily basis. Here at David Chiropractic, LLC in Sebastian, FL, our team wants to make people be aware of the fact that pinched nerves should be evaluated by a medical practitioner sooner than later as they are often associated with other medical conditions. Here is some information about pinched nerves, who is at risk for developing them, and how we treat them here in our office.

Pinched Nerves

Causes of Pinched Nerves

There are a number of causes of pinched nerves like the herniation of discs for example. Herniated discs can compress nerve roots causing the condition. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a manifestation of pinched nerves in the wrists. It occurs when tendon sheaths swell, a bone in the tunnel enlarges or a degenerated ligament thickens. Other conditions associated with the compression of nerves include but are not limited to, repetitive stress injuries, obesity, arthritis of the wrist and rheumatoid arthritis. Pinched nerves can also manifest as the result of a personal or sports-related injury.

Risk Factors Associated With Pinched Nerves

Nerve pathways often become swollen due to the weight and water gain associated with pregnancy. Diabetics also have a greater risk of developing pinched nerves. In addition, people who are confined to a bed for extended periods of time are also at greater risk for developing pinched nerves.  Other risk factors associated with pinched nerves include repetitive shoulder, wrist or hand movements, and excessive body weight.

How We Help

Here in our clinic, our doctor conducts a comprehensive exam to determine if there are any subluxations along the spinal column. If any are identified our chiropractor will treat the patient with a spinal adjustment as a part of his treatment plan. Other chiropractic treatment modalities used here in our clinic include ultrasound therapy, cold laser therapy, hot and cold therapies, and electrostimulation therapies. In addition, our chiropractor may recommend an individualized exercise regimen to help strengthen the core and back muscles.
